Correspondence

This is a raw dump of the tweets and emails that flew around on Friday, March 13th. Preserved here for historical interest and to prevent anyone from having to wade through twitter search and each users' search logs again.  There's gonna be hella noise before this thing takes on concrete shape, the mailing list will probably be the best place to watch for discussion.

If you see something here that belongs to you that you want taken down, you can contact me @abachman on twitter, or log in and edit it out from this page.

@abachman @benkutil I'm afraid that what it boils down to is that SXSWi is spring break for geeks. Not detecting a lot of other point.

Hi Randi,

A bunch of us on Twitter are kicking around a proposal by Adam Bachman for an interactive / technology spinoff of Artscape; a la SXSW interactive, but uniquely Baltimore.  Is that of interest to you guys?  We'll probably use crowdsourcing to plan it out but as a friend of BOPA I would love to see if we could partner up with you.

We, the tech crowd, would do all of the work.  I think it could be a really exciting story and a way to highlight all of the positive developments in Baltimore tech community...

what do you think?

Hi, Mike.  Good to hear from you.  Your project sounds exciting and we'd

love to hear more.  Fringe events planned around Artscape are great and

we're always happy to help, especially with promotion/publicity.

However, adding interactive media to Artscape's core mission

(visual/performing arts) and/or sponsoring the project with dollars is

not something we're in a position to consider at this late date for

Artscape 09.

Let us know what you have in mind.  Thanks.

Mike,

From looking at the artscape site (http://www.artscape.org/index.cfm?page=join "Join Artscape"), it looks like most categories of participant applications are coming due right now.  It'd be hard to prep and organize Baltimore's interactive community in time to get a good showing.  However there is this (on the page):

In the Neighborhood [Deadline: May 22, 2009]

If you are a business, organization or restaurant in the Bolton Hill, Mt. Royal or Station North Arts & Entertainment District areas of Baltimore and are having an event or promotion during the weekend of Artscape, don't miss this fantastic marketing opportunity!  In the Neighborhood events will be posted on artscape.org (over 150,000 visits in 2008) and in the festival program (5,000 copies distributed).

While a direct association may not be possible, a concurrent event might be doable.  Maybe a demo / presentation format or a few speakers and panels. Would the UB space (I'm thinking where SocialDevCamp was held) fall under the "In the Neighborhood" category?  This would split the whole event out, keep it in line with Artscape (free promotion never hurts), and allow a little more independence of format and branding.

Throw in a little dorkbot, a little ignite style lightning, get some of the myriad game dev companies involved (whose presence I've not seen at any of the Baltimore tech events I've been to), maybe even some High Zero style technology driven performance and I think we've got a delicious stew cooking.

Adam,

I think you've got the right idea.  I can give you the contact info for the UBalt folks and see if they are available.  I also have a line in with the DBED Tourism/Film/Arts folks who would eat this up and throw money (and maybe space) at it.

I am very likely to be out of the country at that particular time but would rabidly support anyone who wanted to make it happen.  Mostly a question of aligning already-sympathetic forces.

Go!

Dave

Mike S: (Sat, Mar 14, 2009 at 7:56 AM)

Yeah, Adam, definitely don't think it should be part of Artscape at least for this year.  We don't need the overhead.  But I thought they'd be psyched about it which it seems like they are.

cool!

-Mike
